Our doctors do not just follow progress in eye surgery. They drive it forward themselves

Modern eye surgery today is not just about state-of-the-art lasers, high-quality operating theatres and experienced doctors. An ever greater role is also played by what happens before the procedure itself - precise diagnostics, correct planning and individual calculation of the intraocular lens.

This very topic was also addressed by the doctors of the iClinic eye clinic, MUDr. Ivo Ďurkovič, MPH and Dr. Mykola Dovbysh, who took part in the 23rd Congress of the Czech Society of Refractive and Cataract Surgery in Brno. At this professional event they presented three lectures focused on intraocular lens calculations and the use of their own system, DUDO Software.

And although it may sound technical at first hearing, for the patient it is something very practical: the more precise the lens calculation before surgery, the greater the chance of good-quality, stable and comfortable vision after the procedure.

Our doctors do not just follow progress in eye surgery. They drive it forward themselves

Why is the intraocular lens calculation so important?

In cataract surgery or in refractive lens exchange, also known as PRELEX, the doctor replaces the natural lens of the eye with a new artificial intraocular lens. This is meant to help the patient see sharply – depending on the type of lens, at distance, at intermediate distance and also up close.

And here comes the key question: what exact power should the implanted lens have?

It is not enough simply to choose “some” lens according to dioptres. The eye is an extremely individual organ. What matters is its length, the curvature of the cornea, the optical conditions, the type of implanted lens, eye dominance, the patient's lifestyle and also their expectations after the procedure.

In other words: the eye is not an off-the-peg size. It cannot be approached in the style of “a medium will do”. With eyesight, it is a matter of millimetres, microns and precision, which the patient feels in everyday life after surgery - when reading, driving, working at a computer or in the evening in the headlights of cars.

What can affect the result after surgery?

If the intraocular lens calculation is not precise enough, the patient may experience several difficulties after the procedure. The most common include residual dioptres, reduced comfort in night vision, halo effects around lights or the feeling that their vision is not as sharp as they expected.

This does not mean that the surgery was not performed correctly. It means that in modern intraocular procedures, precise planning is just as important as the surgical procedure itself.

That is precisely why at iClinic we pay exceptional attention to pre-operative diagnostics and intraocular lens calculations. The aim is to personalise the result as much as possible for the specific patient.

DUDO Software: an innovative and the latest calculator for more precise planning of procedures

At iClinic we have long been investing in technologies that are of real significance for the patient. One of the most important examples is the 6th-generation DUDO Software - our own calculator developed for advanced intraocular lens calculation.

DUDO Software analyses more than 40 biometric parameters of the eye and takes into account the specific type of implanted lens, eye dominance and the individual needs of the patient. Its aim is to help the doctor plan the procedure with the greatest possible precision.

So it is not just “another piece of software on the computer”. It is a tool that combines medical experience, modern diagnostics, data modelling and practical experience from the operating theatre.

MUDr. Ivo Ďurkovič, MPH, founder and head ophthalmologist of the iClinic eye clinic

MUDr. Ivo Ďurkovič, MPH, chief ophthalmologist of the iClinic network, explains: „In cataract surgery or in the PRELEX procedure, it is not only the implantation of the lens itself that matters. What is extremely important is how precisely we can calculate its power before the procedure. Every eye is different, and that is exactly why the calculation must be as individual as possible. DUDO Software helps us take into account a large number of parameters that can affect the patient's resulting vision.”

For the patient, this above all means greater certainty that the choice and calculation of the lens will not be based only on basic data, but on a detailed analysis of the eye.

In procedures such as FEMTO Z-Prelex or cataract surgery, the aim is to achieve the best possible functional result. After surgery, the patient does not want to deal with having undergone the procedure but still needing glasses where they expected freedom. They want to see sharply, comfortably and naturally.

A precise intraocular lens calculation can help reduce the risk of residual dioptres and undesirable optical phenomena. However, the result always depends on the individual eye findings, the type of procedure, the chosen lens and the overall health of the eye.

Our doctors do not just follow progress in eye surgery

When is the intraocular lens calculation used?

The intraocular lens calculation is crucial especially in procedures in which the natural lens of the eye is replaced with an artificial one. Typically these are:

Cataract surgery

In cataract, the natural lens of the eye becomes clouded. The solution is its surgical replacement with a new artificial intraocular lens.

PRELEX and FEMTO Z-Prelex

These procedures are intended mainly for patients over 40 who want to get rid of glasses for reading, for distance and for intermediate distance. When the natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens, a precise calculation is absolutely essential.

Refractive lens exchange for higher dioptres

For some patients, lens exchange may be more suitable than laser surgery of the cornea. However, the best method is always decided by the ophthalmologist after a comprehensive examination.

Expertise that does not end in the operating theatre

The participation of iClinic doctors in the professional congress in Brno is important for another reason as well. It shows that our doctors not only use modern technologies, but actively take part in developing them and share their experience with the professional community.

This is extremely important in medicine. Progress does not come about by simply waiting to see what the market brings. It comes about when doctors monitor results, compare data, look for more precise procedures and ask how an even better result can be brought to the patient.

That is exactly what the development of DUDO Softwareis about. It is not a marketing gimmick. It is the result of long-term work with real patients, real measurements and real results after surgery.

If you are considering surgery, ask about the lens calculation

When choosing an eye clinic, patients often ask mainly about the price, the type of lens or the name of the procedure. That is natural. But with cataract surgery or the PRELEX procedure, one more very important question should be asked:

“How will you calculate the power of my intraocular lens?”

It is a question that can reveal a lot about how the clinic approaches planning the procedure. Because modern eye surgery is not only about what happens during the operation. It is also about what happens before it.

At iClinic we want only the best for your eyesight

At iClinic we combine the experience of eye surgeons, modern diagnostics, state-of-the-art technologies and our own DUDO Software. Our aim is for every procedure to be planned as precisely as possible and tailored as closely as possible to the specific patient.

If you are considering cataract surgery, the FEMTO Z-Prelex procedure or want to get rid of glasses after 40, start with a comprehensive eye examination. It is precisely this that will show which method is most suitable for you and what result can realistically be expected in your case.
