Lasek - excimer laser

The excimer laser is used to correct refractive errors of the eye and its task is the adjustment of the corneal surface so that the surgery results in a sharper and clearer vision. The Lasek technology has been used for more than 20 years, and it brings many benefits.

THE COURSE OF THE SURGERY

  1. The surgery is performed under local anaesthetic, numbing eye drops are applied to the eye before the procedure.
  2. A 20% alcohol solution is applied to the corneal epithelium for 30 seconds.
  3. The corneal epithelium is mechanically removed. In the past, the epithelium was applied back to the cornea after the procedure, however, this step often lead to postoperative complications in the healing process, therefore it is currently removed completely.
  4. The laser shapes the cornea into the desired form.
  5. A preparation against scarring of the corneal tissue and a contact lens are applied to the eye, and the eye heals underneath.

THE ADVANTAGES OF THE EXCIMER LASER

Surgery using the Lasek technology has distinct advantages:

  • performed under local anaesthesia
  • takes about 15 minutes
  • does not require hospitalization, you go home right after the surgery
  • the laser uses an eye tracking system during the surgery, which promptly responds to the movement of the eye, thus preventing its damage
  • the vision settles within a month
  • continuous removal of the refractive error with stable laser pulses. It is not necessary to smooth the cornea.
  • the eye is irritable and sensitive to light 2-3 days after surgery.

WHO IS THE SURGERY USING AN EXCIMER LASER SUITABLE FOR

To undergo an surgery using an excimer laser, it is required to meet the following requirements:

  • older than 18 years
  • stable refractive error
  • no risk of changes in the retina or corneal diseases (infection, degenerative diseases,
  • keratoconus)
  • no rheumatic diseases, advanced diabetes, severe liver damage, severe immune disorders, etc.

The surgery is also not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, patients with a pacemaker, and patients with a tendency for excessive scar formation. However, the suitability of the procedure is decided by the doctor after the examination.

RISKS AND LIMITATIONS

Like every surgery, the Lasek method may have unwanted side effects on the human body. Postoperative complications are individual, but lacrimation, the feeling of cutting and burning of the eye, pain, redness, sensitivity to light, swelling, and the sensation of a foreign body in the eye are frequent. However, the problems go away gradually with the healing.

For successful treatment without complications, it is necessary to follow the doctor's instructions and undergo checks at designated times - most frequently after 3, 6, 12 and 18 months. Despite the sharp vision, it is necessary to apply eye drops for the eyesight to stabilize completely.

After completing the surgery, it is not advisable to swim and play contact sports, visit a sauna, solarium, or salt caves.

Advantages

At iClinic we use lasers by the German company Wavelight AG., which are the only ones in the world to have the FDA certificate for all refractive errors of the eye. They are also the fastest lasers with the FDA certificate. This technology is characterised by safety, accuracy and speed.

1. Safety

Safety and eliminated damage to health is the primary prerequisites for the overall success of the surgery. Thanks to sophisticated Perfect Pulse technology, it is guaranteed that the rays get where they should even if you move the eye. The quick eye tracking system tracks the location of the eye 400 times per second, so the rays are placed only in the right areas. Smart layout of interventions on the cornea prevents its burning.

2. Accuracy
On the basis of the initial examination, we create a treatment profile with the desired result. It is then translated into a tiny 0.68 mm laser which finely shapes surface of the cornea. Uniform beam energy is always checked, thereby ensuring the smooth surface of the cornea, higher quality results and a shorter healing time.

3. Speed
The speed of the corneal adjustment to the desired shape is optimized, which reduces the risk of infection when the cornea is exposed to the air. The higher speed of the surgery thanks to lesser eye dehydration and smaller stress burden also means shorter healing time and a higher quality of vision in the twilight.
