Laser eye surgery
Refractive laser eye surgery has been used successfully for several decades to correct all refractive errors of the eye. This is also thanks to cutting-edge technology that keeps moving ophthalmology forward. Laser procedures are based on reshaping the cornea so as to successfully correct and eliminate refractive errors such as myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness) or astigmatism. Another common procedure is refractive lens exchange, which allows patients to get rid of glasses at all distances – far, intermediate and near (reading). The third and latest generation of these procedures no longer even requires the creation of a corneal flap or excimer laser ablation of the cornea. This is the Relex Smile method.

No more reading glasses
(or distance glasses) – the PRELEX method
After the age of forty, many of us need to hold text further and further away from our eyes in order to focus on it. This phenomenon is known medically as presbyopia – the age-related loss of the natural ability of the human lens to accommodate, i.e. to focus on near and distant objects. It is associated with ageing and affects all of us. The solution is either reading glasses or refractive lens exchange, in which the natural lenses are replaced with artificial trifocal lenses. The method is called PRELEX (presbyopic lens exchange). Thanks to artificial trifocal lenses, the patient gains 100% visual acuity at all distances – far, intermediate (computer) and near (reading) – without having to wear any glasses at all. The advantage of this method is the permanent, lifelong correction of all refractive errors, as well as the prevention of cataract in the future. This eye surgery is suitable for patients over 45.
FEMTO Z-PRELEX
This method of replacing the natural lenses with trifocal intraocular lenses is recommended for people over 40. The surgery frees patients not only from reading glasses but also from their other refractive errors, i.e. from glasses for distance and intermediate (computer) vision. The advantage of this method is the permanent, lifelong correction of all refractive errors, as well as the prevention of cataract. Thanks to our technology, both eyes can be operated on in a single day. The procedure uses a femtosecond laser that fragments the natural lens into several pieces, sparing the surrounding ocular tissue. The femtosecond laser also opens the anterior lens capsule with a perfectly precise diameter of 5.0 millimetres – a step that, in conventional surgery, the surgeon performs manually with a needle or forceps. At the same time, the femtosecond laser creates a corneal access incision just 1.8 millimetres wide, through which the artificial trifocal lens is implanted. In the conventional procedure, this opening is made by cutting the cornea with a diamond knife. If the patient has a combined refractive error with astigmatism, our Swiss femtosecond laser from Ziemer can correct astigmatism of up to ±5 dioptres using arcuate incisions, i.e. precise incisions in the cornea. This method of correction is significantly more precise than the use and implantation of toric lenses. It is a minimally invasive operation performed without sharp objects or surgical instruments, which makes it extremely safe for the patient.

Cataract surgery
Cataract is an eye disease in which the lens of the eye becomes clouded. It most often comes with ageing and can even lead to blindness. Symptoms include blurred outlines and contours, poor contrast, sensitivity to glare, double vision and a loss of distance visual acuity that cannot be corrected with any glasses. There is no medication for cataract – the only way to help patients is to replace their own lens with an artificial one.
