No-touch lens implantation
Injectors
Injectors are a great help to ophthalmologists and are used to implant intraocular lenses through a micro-incision in the cornea. Whenever possible, an injector should be used for micro-incision implantation, and the lens should be implanted through an incision that has not been enlarged, in order to avoid corneal damage and induced astigmatism. Modern surgical techniques allow implantation through an incision of less than 2.5 mm. Thanks to advances in technology and in the development of intraocular lenses, lenses can be safely implanted through a micro-incision. At the iClinic eye clinic, we implant lenses through a corneal opening of only 1.8 mm.
Advantages of surgery using injectors:
- Minimal corneal incision.
- Thanks to the sophisticated hydraulic effect of the injectors, lens implantation is more precise, gentler and safer.
- The injector is a closed pressure system; a silicone sleeve acts as the plunger.
- The viscoelastic solution moistens and lubricates the surface of the eye, acting as a hydraulic medium.
- The compressive force helps the lens move through the cartridge. Thanks to the pressure, the lens moves with minimal physical contact, and sufficient lubrication between the lens and the cartridge is ensured.
- Scratches on the lens or uncontrolled release of the lens from the cartridge are a thing of the past.
- A lens implanted with an injector is in perfect condition.
- Thanks to modern applicators, the surgeon no longer comes into contact with the lens. The lenses are so-called preloaded and do not need any handling before implantation.
At our clinic we use 2 types of injector:
- RAYNER RayOne®
- the BLUEMIXS 180 injector by the German brand ZEISS
