Do you really need reading glasses?
If you have not yet celebrated your fortieth birthday, or did so only a few years ago, you may not be able to imagine that one day you too will have to wear prescription glasses. If you have not yet heard of the refractive error called presbyopia, you should pay attention. Old-age sight or short arm syndrome, as presbyopia is popularly called, will soon affect you too. So you are at real risk of having to wear glasses.

Presbyopia is an eye defect, which is closely related to the ageing of the organism. Ageing does not spare the human lens either. With age it loses its elasticity, and so we are unable to focus on very close objects. We cannot recognise faces in a photograph, the text of a message on our mobile phone is blurred, and without a corrective aid we cannot even read a book or our favourite magazine. It most often manifests between the ages of 40 and 45 and stabilises, i.e. it no longer worsens, only after the age of sixty. Reading glasses or special contact lenses are used for correction. However, if you do not want to get used to glasses or lenses, you have one more option. To undergo laser eye surgery. And why right now is the most suitable time for it, we will reveal at the end of the article.
So if you have started to notice some of the symptoms, such as blurred vision at short distances, hazy vision or greater fatigue, or eye pain and headaches after reading, do not hesitate to visit an ophthalmologist. If they diagnose incipient presbyopia, immediately start thinking about how you will deal with it.
The first option is reading glasses. You have surely noticed that your older friends, parents or grandparents take out their glasses when they are going to read. Or, if they already have some prescription glasses – for distance or for intermediate distances – they swap them for others when reading. These are the reading glasses mentioned, which help you see the nearest objects sharply. It has probably occurred to you straight away that glasses in general are not a very practical aid, and the idea of also having to swap them for others may literally terrify you. It is not quite that bad, though. There are glasses with multifocal lenses that allow good vision at all distances. However, it must be added in the same breath that these are not suitable for everyone. Multifocal glasses take getting used to, which can be a serious problem, and some people cannot get used to them at all.
In any case, if, despite all the impractical features of reading glasses, you decide to get a pair, always follow the doctor's instructions and buy them at an optician's according to precisely determined parameters. Only in this way will you eliminate the risk of further worsening your eyesight.
Contact lenses are somewhat more practical
If glasses are too restrictive for you, try contact lenses. When handling them, however, observe maximum hygiene. Do not exceed the period for which you may wear them, clean them regularly in the solution intended for this purpose and never remove or insert them with unwashed hands. They create an ideal environment for the transmission of bacteria or viruses from the hands into the eye, and unpleasant eye infections can occur very easily. At the same time, you need to realise that presbyopic contact lenses are not among the cheapest and in the long term using them can be considerably expensive.
Modern surgical method now extremely good value
In the introduction we promised to reveal why it is worth thinking about laser surgery right now. Until the end of the school holidays, i.e. until 31. 8. 2021, iClinic is currently running a fantastic promotion thanks to which you can have both eyes operated on for the price of one. And no, you need not worry that you would miss out on summer fun because of the procedure. You only need to book the operation now; you can undergo it up to 31. 12. 2021.
The promotion includes the three most modern methods of today, one of which treats precisely presbyopia – FEMTO Z-Prelex. The essence of the procedure is the exchange of the worn-out lens and its replacement with a new, trifocal lens. Trifocal because after its implantation the patient gains problem-free vision at all three distances. Thanks to it, you will get rid of glasses for distance, for near and reading glasses too. With the operation you secure permanent vision correction, and an indisputable advantage of the artificial lens is also the fact that it will never develop a cataract.
MUDr. Ivo Ďurkovič, MPH chief physician and founder of the iClinic network of eye clinics says of the FEMTO Z-Prelex method that “it is an even gentler, faster and safer method than the traditional Prelex method. It uses only a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser; no sharp surgical instruments are needed. The procedure is painless and is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia. It is characterised by a minimal risk of undesirable side complications and rapid recovery.”

Approaching forty? Get ready for reading glasses
The bad news is that presbyopia is one of those conditions that simply cannot be avoided, even if you had an exemplary lifestyle and followed all the principles of the very best prevention, or even if you lived in a less developed country without televisions or mobile phones, which in general do not benefit our eyesight. Old-age sight simply affects everyone. Regardless of sex or race.So if you have started to notice some of the symptoms, such as blurred vision at short distances, hazy vision or greater fatigue, or eye pain and headaches after reading, do not hesitate to visit an ophthalmologist. The demanding (not only) first months of wearing glasses
If you have not worn glasses until now, get ready for several situations that you will probably experience with them, especially in the first months. You will forget them, you may damage them through careless handling, or leave them somewhere. And also be prepared for the fact that during certain activities you will be lost without your reading glasses. You simply do not have arms long enough to hold the display of your mobile phone at the necessary distance. And if you think you can get around this by putting it down somewhere and simply moving away, that will not help either. From that distance you will no longer be able to read the text on the display. It will simply be too far away.In any case, if, despite all the impractical features of reading glasses, you decide to get a pair, always follow the doctor's instructions and buy them at an optician's according to precisely determined parameters.
